Mildred Kerr Bush (
January 12,
1985 –
May 19,
1997) better known as
Millie, was the
pet springer spaniel of
Barbara and
George H. W. Bush. She was named for Mildred Caldwell Kerr, a long-time friend of the Bush's, also the name of Kerr granddaughter, Millie Kerr. She is credited as the author of
Millie's Book: As Dictated to Barbara Bush (ISBN 0-688-11913-1). In 1989, Millie gave birth to a litter of six puppies, including
Spot Fetcher and Ranger, who became George H. W. Bush's dog. Ranger died of cancer in May 1993. Spot would later become another
presidential pet when
George W. Bush moved into the
White House.
Millie was portrayed in an episode of
Murphy Brown.
Millie died of
pneumonia in 1997 at age 12.
A dog park in Houston, Texas, is named after Millie.
